Richman Greer Attorneys Obtain $1 Million in Damages for Prominent Businessman in Defamation Lawsuit MIAMI & WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.
(August 6, 2014) – Florida law firm Richman Greer today announced that client Stanley Handal, a noted Haitian businessman, was awarded more than $1 million in damages by a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in a defamation lawsuit against Raymond Joseph and his brother, Leo Joseph. Raymond Joseph is a former Haitian ambassador to the United States... Litigation Shareholder Gary S. Betensky and Associate Joshua L. Spoont represented Handal in proving that the Josephs, through their newspaper, Haiti Observateur, maliciously defamed him by publishing two articles that falsely alleged Handal was involved in criminal activities and arrested. The Josephs claimed their information had come from FBI agents, police, informants and other sources who wished to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to disclose this information. The attorneys proved all of these claims false in court. “We are thrilled with our win on behalf of our client Mr. Handal, who is a well-respected business leader in Haiti, and restoring his good name,” Betensky said. “What the Josephs published in the Haiti Observateur was false, despicable and reckless. We are pleased that the judge agreed and awarded such significant damages to Mr. Handal.” Judge Donald Graham ruled that the “character of the defamatory statement themselves” constituted “such a degree of reprehensibility as to warrant a substantial penalty” against the Josephs.
